The term meninge is derived from the Greek word "menix" or "meningos", which means "membrane". When spoken in ancient Greece, it was used to emphasizes the brain's "coverings". The meninges comprise the dura mater, the pia mater, and the arachnoid membranes. They are protective layers encasing the central nervous system.(brain and spinal cord)
