Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease that can lead to muscle weakness and paralysis. The disease can be prevented by receiving multiple doses of the polio vaccine, but there is no known cure. As of 2014, with the exception of sporadic cases in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, polio had been eradicated in most of the world. In 2015, the Nigerian government announced no new cases of Polio. However, recently the Nigerian Government reported to the WHO "that two children have been paralyzed by the disease in the northern Borno state. As an immediate priority, the Government of Nigeria is collaborating with WHO and other partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to respond urgently and prevent more children from being paralyzed".
On Wednesday, August 31st, 2016, from 8-9am PST Dr. J.K. Gude will present a case discussion on a recent outbreak of Poliomyelitis in Nigeria. Please review the time in your international location for this ONLINE presentation.
