Medical Disorders of Marathon Runners

Boston Marathon 2015 winners:

Running a marathon is a quest or goal for many that volunteer their time. In fact, many nonprofit organizations have sponsored marathon races. As far as competitive marathon running, Kevin Hiller of the WSJ wrote: "that if the Boston Marathon were a competition between nations, Kenya or Ethiopia would likely take gold." The next logical question would be why do these countries consistently win these events and at what cost to athletes bodies?

On Wednesday, February 24, 2016, Dr.

One Race, the Human Race.

We are currently pursuing all avenues to help those volunteers residing outside of the US an opportunity to assist us on our medical missions abroad.  Ideally, the indigenous medical facility should play an integral part of vetting all area volunteers. As we move forward please stay in touch for additional information on future missions!

Opioid Overdose: "Prevention of Lethality"

In the United States, the prescribing, distribution and regulation of narcotic medication has been under much scrutiny. In a society where the abuse of these medicines have accounted for numerous deaths, lawmakers and federal agencies have enacted laws in an effort to deter drug abuse.

On Wednesday, February 17, 2016, Dr. Gude will present a case presentation on Opioid Overdose: "Prevention of Lethality". The times for this online discussion is from 8am-9am Pacific Standard Time. Please review the times for your international location.

The Olympic Games w/o the Zika Virus

The Zika Virus is no stranger in Uganda.  After-all, it was named after the Zika Forest located in Uganda.  However, the virus hasn't been considered to be much of a threat to Ugandans and Africans alike. In reality, the Zika virus doesn't cause many illnesses. (compared to the other prevalent Flavivirus: Dengue and Yellow Fever) A developing story is on the affect that the Zika Virus will have on the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro. Will the Olympic games have poor attendance due to the concern of becoming infected with the Zika Virus?

Emergency funding requested to combat the Zika Virus

The White House is requesting emergency aid to combat the spread of the Zika Virus. The proposed funding would be distributed as follows:
*$828 million for the CDC to support Zika preparedness and response capacity in areas where mosquitoes are known to transmit the virus; to improve mosquito control programs; to build virus surveillance and education efforts, and enhance laboratory capacity to test for the Zika virus
*$250 million for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to support a temporary 1-year increase in Puerto Rico's Medicaid Federal Medical Assistance Percentage that would aid pregnant women at-risk of infection or diagnosed with the virus (the territory has documented recent and ongoing transmission of the virus)

Skin Infections

How many times have you heard your parent tell you to put medicine on a cut when it occurs? This advise and seeing your health care provider early can save you a lot of pain and suffering.

Two common infections of the skin areerysipelasandcellulitis. They occur that as a result of bacteria entering the body via breaks in the skin. Both erysipelas and cellulitis are warm to the touch, red, and often swollen. Erysipelas can be thought of as a superficial skin infection while cellulitis involves the deeper dermis.

Medical Missions 2016

Dear Volunteers:

As you may be aware, our intent was to make a decision concerning upcoming medical mission dates in January 2016. However, the uptempo migration of the Zika virus has caused our organization to move our announcement to a later date. Currently, August 25, to September 5, 201‚Äč6, are dates proposed for one medical mission.  Future updates will be available online at

Intestinal Flora-The Ecosystem within us.

Pseudomembranous colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease associated with the organism C. difficle.  Many believe that this infection prevails when the normal intestinal bacteria die or is replaced by C. difficle.  A case presentation on Clostridium Difficle and Enterocolitis will be presented by Dr. Gude on February 3, 2016.  The times for the online discussion is from 8am-9am Pacific Standard Time. Please review the times for your international location.
